Operation tests begin at the new MBT plant of the Centre Integral de Valorització de Residus del Maresme
When it works at its full capacity, the new plant will treat 190,000 tons per year of REST fraction
From Monday morning, the tests started to check all the facilities except for those of anaerobic digestion, which will take place later
Monday morning, a truck with mixed waste faction coming from Masnou was the first to unload in the pit of the new plant where operation tests have begun. The new MBT plant will make it possible for the mixed waste fraction arriving at the Centre Integral de Valorització to undergo first a mechanical treatment, by which the recoverable materials will be separated and classified (paper, metal, plastic, glass, etc.). Also, as the new facilities start functioning, the organic waste that may be contained in the mixture coming to the Centre will undergo a biological treatment to obtain biogas and produce electric power, on one hand, and make compost from the final stabilized waste, on the other. Up to yesterday midnight, more than 23 tons of mixed fraction had already been treated (23.7).
The new facilities host several transfer stations
The Centre also includes a bulky waste line of treatment (sofas, furniture, etc.), and different transfer stations for the fractions collected separately (food waste, glass, light packaging, and paper and cardboard) in order to reduce transport to the final recuperators and so make the collection more efficient in the entire area.
It is important to keep in mind that the Waste-to-Energy plant annex to the pretreatment plant is also undergoing some improvement works to adapt to the needs of the new type of waste from which energy will be recovered. The L1 in the Waste-to-Energy plant is supposed to be operating again by the end of this month.
