More than 300 people from the waste management sector from around Europe will take part in the sessions, with 28 speakers and 7 moderators
The European professionals of urban waste management will take Mataró as a point of reference during the days of the congress
The chairman of the Consorci per al Tractament de Residus Sòlids Urbans del Maresme and mayor of Mataró, Joan Antoni Baron, presented Recuwatt congress (Recycling and Energy) last Thursday morning in the Centre Integral de Valorització de Residus del Maresme to be held at the Auditori-Tecnocampus in Mataró on 24-25 March.
The congress is intended to become an international meeting of reference for the professionals, from both the public and the private sector, working in waste management and energy recovery. Up to this date, more than 300 people from the waste management sector in Europe have confirmed their attendance to a programme of sessions with 28 speakers and 7 moderators from 10 different countries.
Baron pointed out the importance of the gathering because it brings the Maresme district and its capital city, Mataró, to the centre of the debate on urban waste management in Europe, given “The level of knowledge and experience both of the speakers and the participants at the congress.” He added that “We are within a legal framework where the most important thing is energy recovery, after a previous process, but always before disposal in a landfill. These are all relevant enough elements to promote this meeting with experts of all over Europe.” Besides, for the chairman of the Consorci per al Tractament de RSU del Maresme, “Aiming for energy recovery does not contradict the idea of recycling, as has been shown in the Maresme district.”
Baron explained that the Secretària d’Estat de Canvi Climàtic (State Secretary for Climate Change), Teresa Ribera, and the director de l’Agència de Residus de Catalunya (Director of the Catalunya Waste Agency), Josep Maria Tost will attend the opening of the congress on 24 March, at the Auditori-Tecnocampus in Mataró.
A meeting that will favour reflection on the needs of the new legal frame
It is important to remember that the new Directive 2008/98/CE (Waste Framework Directive) sets a legal and strategic milestone in waste management in the EU. The objectives and determinations of the Directive generate a crucial moment for the new legal approach derived from its conversion, as well as the planning and revision of the corresponding national and regional plans.
For this reason, the Congress intends to open an objective and professional debate on every aspect related to waste management, highlighting the circumstances of all kinds that are given rise on energy recovery in Spain and Europe.
A two-day programme composed by seven blocks with the participation of experts renowned internationally
The chairman of the Consorci also highlighted the pioneering character of the meeting, both at regional (Catalunya) and national (Spain) levels. He explained the blocks forming the programme:
Block I: The new legal framework and waste management
Block II: Climate change and waste management
Block III: Energy perspectives of waste management
Block IV: Different situations in Europe
Block V: Energy recovery as a complement in a waste management system
Block VI: Energy recovery and society
Block VII: Efficient energy recovery
The parallel activities to the congress have also been detailed. Among others, there will be a reception at the city council of Mataró on the 23 March, including a visit to the Modernist sites in the city, and on the 25, after the congress official closure, there will be a visit to the Centre Integral de Valorització de Residus del Maresme.
