The Centre Integral de Valorització de Residus del Maresme has increased its electric power generation capacity

The new equipment that will enable the sale of energy to the public network is already working. The sold energy will be equivalent to the annual consumption of 85,000 people, with the combustion of less waste

A new turbine together with the existing one will transform the steam generated from the waste combustion into electricity

The improvements implemented in the Centre Integral de Valorització de Residus del Maresme ensure the maximum energetic performance of the waste combustion resulting from the exhaustive pretreatment of the waste carried out in the plant. A new generator turbine of 2.35 MW has been added to the existing one of 11.25 MW in order to increase the electric power obtained from the transformation of the steam produced thanks to the waste combustion. This will enable the Centre to produce a total amount of 115,000 MWh/year of electric power, although the amount of waste combustion will decrease.
A part of this production (30,000 MWh/year) will be destined to the Centre’s consumption to operate the MBT and the W-T-E plant, while the remaining amount, 85,000 MWh/year, will be sold to the public network. This is equivalent to the annual consumption of 85,000 people or the consumption combined of the towns of Premià de Mar, El Masnou, Calella, and Arenys de Mar.

To obtain these results, a series of improvements have been made in the Waste-to-Energy plant, and the state of the art technology in combustion control and reduction and control of emissions has been applied

Among the improcements in the control of combustion, we highlight:
- Increase of the heat exchange surfaces in the boilers.
- Substitution of existing pipes by new pipes in different parts of the boilers.
- New protections made out of a special anticorrosion alloy with greater heat transfer.
- Increase of the amount of steam generated, and adaptation of the water-steam circuit.
- New intelligent system of combustion regulation: FuzzEvent.
- Installation of a thermal camera to see the combustion within the grate.
- Installation of two IR pirometres per line to optimize the combustion process.
- Modification of the primary and secondary air injection to the grates.

Among the improvements in the reduction and control of the emissions, we highlight:
- New SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) to reduce NOx with the injection of ammonia.
- Installation of the new continuous multigas analysis devices at the exit of the boilers, additional to those at the end of the flue gas cleaning system.
- Installation of a new continuous mercury (Hg) analysis device per line.
